Advanced Disposal Services, Inc. received a letter from Alabama Department of Environmental Management this week to commence operations at Turkey Trot Landfill. The municipal solid waste (MSW) landfill, located at 2328 Mannish Ryan Road, is now accepting waste from southern Alabama.
In addition to discounted disposal rates, Washington County will receive a host fee based on a tiered structure, providing considerable economic benefits to residents.
“We’re thrilled to finally be open for business,” said Advanced Disposal Vice President – Landfills Gerald Allen. “We look forward to Turkey Trot Landfill becoming a vital contributor to the financial well-being of Washington County.”
The environmental services company was awarded a contract in January 2007 following a competitive bid process to permit, construct and operate a MSW landfill on an approved site in Washington County. During the assessment process, the company and its regulatory partners discovered a colony of gopher tortoises on the 300-acre landfill site.
In August, Advanced Disposal filmed the relocation process and created a documentary-style film titled “Relocating the Gopher Tortoise at Turkey Trot Landfill” in an effort to bring awareness to the federally-protected species. The landfill, as well as all waste disposal cells, are built to meet or exceed the specifications of Subtitle D of the Federal Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA), which include:
- A bottom liner (high-density polyethylene, 60 mil, along with a 24-inch clay liner)
- Leachate collections system (leachate is any liquid that comes into contact with the refuse)
